Because then I was in seminary. I was working off Suzanne Langer's ideas about "felt experience." But also referring to "The Shape of Liturgy," a work of comparative Christian Mass through history. And the theories of Victor Turner about "liminal space," referring to indigenous ceremonies, so that I could include thought about the opening of Blackfeet Thunderpipe Bundles which I knew from the Sixties, as a participant with old people born in 1880.
The D.Min was dropped in favor of an M. Div, which was the normative degree anyhow. By this time I had been using my Pacific Northwest Leadership School principles (supplied by Rev. Peter Raible, minister of the University Unitarian Church in Seattle) with the small prairie fellowships I served.
I've been working on a manuscript about human spiritual ceremonies since 1980, when it was originally a thesis meant to satisfy the requirements for a Doctor of Ministry degree at Meadville/Lombard Theological School. Over the thirty-five years since, the shaft of this arrow-intention has remained the same through time, still aimed at deep experience. Everything else has changed. These short pieces are a record, probably not chronological.
